The paddle steamer Sirius was the first vessel to steam continuously across the Atlantic. She was built by Robert Menzies & Sons at Leith for the St George's Steam Packet Company's cross-channel service from London to Cork, but was chartered by the British and American Steam Navigation Company to make the journey between Cork Harbour and New York. She left on 4 April 1838 and the journey to New York took 18 days and 10 hours. After a second double crossing she returned to short journeys, this time from Cork to Glasgow. She was wrecked in 1847.
