Dr Bell's School was built in 1838. His statue is on the front of the school.
Dr Andrew Bell was the originator of the Madras system of education, which is named after the city in India (now Chennai) where he first started using it in an orphanage for the sons of army officers. The teacher instructed a small group of pupils, and each of them passed the lesson on to a group of younger pupils.
