Title
Section from Theatres of the East, a Japanese handscroll painting
Description
Section of a handscroll painting depicting the theatre district of Edo, or Tokyo in Japan as it is known today.

Two figures kneel as a man with a walking stick approaches the end of a street. The man is surrounded by a group of attendants and two of them are carrying objects over their shoulders, a case and a long ornamental stick. There are also shop selling swords, and puppets and a puppet theatre behind the street.

Reading the scroll from right to left, this is the beginning of the scroll painting, featuring an important patron making his entrance to the street. It is thought the man of status could represent the person for who the painting was originally produced.
