Title
Letter to Miss Jane Rice, from the War Office, 18 September 1918
Description
Re. 352442 Pte. C Rice, 9th Royal Scots

Madam

In further reply to your letter of the 27 June 1918 concerning the above-named soldier, I am directed to inform you that enquiries have been made and it is now reported from the Base that he has been missing since the date on which he was wounded on 24 March 1918.
It is regretted that the fact that he was missing was not reported earlier, but in the circumstances of the fighting in the field, it is not possible for Commanding Officers always to know whether a man known to have been wounded, has been picked up by our own stretcher bearers.
I am to express the sympathy of the Army Council with the soldier's relatives in their anxiety, and to enclose for your information a leaflet showing the steps taken by this Office with a view to obtaining reliable news regarding missing men.
I am to add that should any further information be received, it will be communicated to the next of kin by the Officer in Charge of Infantry Records - 92 Cadzow Road, Hamilton.

I am, Madam,
Your obedient servant
