Coronation celebrations through the years
For many people across the country, King Charles III’s coronation on Saturday 6 May 2023 was the first time they bore witness to the crowning of a new monarch. This exhibition provides opportunity to take a look back at the pageantry and celebrations held throughout Edinburgh for previous coronations.

The photos included show that the citizens of Edinburgh went all out for the coronations of 1903, 1937 and 1953 with floodlights, coronation arches and decorations being just some of ways the occasion was marked. Photos show large crowds of people gathered to watch Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark's coronation parade in 1903. Floodlights marked the coronation of George VI in 1937. Then in 1953, celebrations were also held in neighbourhoods across the city for Elizabeth II’s coronation with Newton Street in Gorgie being amongst the settings for street parties.
