Sir John Lavery was born in Belfast in 1856. Lavery studied in Glasgow and became associated with the group of artists known as the 'Glasgow Boys'. Although his earlier works reveal the influence of contemporary French painting, over time James Whistler became a strong force, and it is Whistler's influence of fluid brushwork which is evident in this painting.
It is interesting to note the pall of smoke which hangs over the city, because of which Edinburgh has long been known as "Auld Reekie."
