Built in 1839, it is a typical Victorian built school with large classrooms and windows up high so as not to offer distractions for the children. The pupils would have sat at long benches along long desks and the rooms would have been cold and poorly heated. When the school’s founder, Dr Bell, died in 1832 he left money for several schools to be established, one of which was this one built on Great Junction Street. The school and baths, added in 1891, were used for over a hundred years but have now been repurposed as a community centre.
Andrew Bell is a perfect example of an educated Scot at the end of the 18th century who took part in Britain’s reach across the world through religion, trade, slavery and empire. He made more of an impact than most, though, as he introduced a revolutionary system of education that increased the number of children who could be taught in schools. The system was used for a long time throughout Britain. His life took him to India and work with the East India Company, trading in opium and tea with China. It was during his time teaching educated soldiers’ children in Chennai that he developed his ideas around education.
