Title
Women’s blue leather mule slippers, 1870s, Julien Mayer, Paris
Description
Blue glazed leather mule slippers with leather padded sole and blue silk edging and rosettes. No distinction between left and right feet. Sole stamped with maker's mark. Worn at home in the 1870s.
Location
Museum of Edinburgh
Accession number
SH.2019.079
These delicate indoor slippers have glazed leather uppers, a leather sole and a padded insole covered in a soft woven fabric. The rosettes on the front are made of silk. Their soles are identical, with no distinction between left and right. They would have been worn at home, perhaps with a dressing gown over a day dress, for receiving close friends.
Julien Mayer began trading in the 1840s, with many pairs of the company’s shoes arriving in Britain during the boom in French shoe exports of the 1820s to 1850s. By 1874, France was exporting more than 60 million pairs of shoes to overseas markets.
