Description
ANNE PAGE: Will't please your worship to come in, sir?
SLENDER: No, I thank you, forsooth, heartily; I am very well.
ANNE PAGE: The dinner attends you, sir.
SLENDER: I am not a-hungry, I thank you, forsooth. Go,/ sirrah, for all you are my man, go wait upon my/ cousin Shallow.

Smirke’s picture is from the very beginning of the play with Anne Page, Slender and Simple. In the drama, Anne Page is the most eligible maiden in town. She is not only the heiress of a fortune but also a very pretty girl, so naturally every bachelor wants her hand in marriage. This scene is a commonly illustrated one of this comedy. Anne is inviting in Slender and Simple inside for refreshments. Slender gets tongue-tied, and Ann laughs at him. Slender is favoured by her father to marry Anne, who does not care for him, because she is in love with someone else, and she also cannot speak with Slender properly. Anne Page is depicted as a beautiful, lively young girl, while the men look like fools.
