Title
A Merry Meeting
Description
Early 19th century taverns did not look like modern-day pubs. Instead they resembled private houses, consisting of a number of small sitting rooms and a kitchen from which drinks and food were served. This may account for the homely appearance of this tavern scene, which features various household objects displayed on the mantelpiece.

A group of drinkers are depicted laughing and gesticulating at a table. Beyond, a couple who are smoking pipes at the fireside look back towards the party with expressions of bemusement - perhaps disturbed by the noise of these merry-makers.
