Johnnie 'Dowie’s Tavern' was a small, dimly lit but much-loved alehouse in Libberton’s Wynd in Edinburgh’s Old Town, renowned for its excellent ale, simple fare, and convivial atmosphere. Despite its unassuming appearance, it was a nightly meeting place for many respected citizens and notable figures of the late 18th century, including Robert Burns, who frequented it during his time in Edinburgh. The tavern’s popularity owed much to Dowie himself, a kindly, attentive landlord known for his warmth, fairness, and strict but genial order. Under his stewardship, the tavern became a hub of sociability, song, and literary fellowship until its eventual demolition in the 19th century.
