Newhaven was once a busy and thriving fishing community. Oysters had been cultivated in the River Forth for at least 800 years, and by the late 18th Century, millions were gathered each year as an everyday staple food. The fishermen fished the Firth of Forth and the North Sea, for cod and haddock. They used nets for the herring and creels or nets for crabs and lobsters. They dredged for oysters in the winter months.
