The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of David Johnstone Macfie, Esq., is situated in the parish of Heriot, at an elevation of about 830 feet above the sea. It is a modern building, erected about the year 1853 from the plans of Mr John Henderson, architect, Edinburgh. It is in the old Scottish baronial style of architecture, and was built near the site of the old house.'
