The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'New-Hall, the property of Horatio Robert Forbes Brown, Esq., is situated in the parish of Penicuik. It stands on the left bank of the North Esk, about four miles from its source, and is about twelve miles south-west of Edinburgh. &The river here has been rendered classic by Ramsay as the scene of his well-known pastoral poem the "Gentle Shepherd". A monastery in early times occupied the site of the house, and in the sixteenth century when occupied by the Crichtouns it was an irregular castellated structure, which with its appendages covered the whole breadth of the point of land on which it stands. It has, however, in recent years been modernised, but still retains some portions of the old building.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Newhall is now an events venue.
