The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of William Ritchie, Esq., is situated in the parish of Borthwick, Midlothian&The house consists of a square centre block, which was built in 1710, and is of massive construction. Wings which are slightly thrown forward, and were built, one about eighty, and the other about fifty years ago, add to the size, but not the comfort of the house, which altogether gives the impression of containing much larger accommodation than it actually possesses.'
