The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This well known historical mansion, the residence of Sir James Hamlyn Williams Williams Drummond, Bart., is situated in the parish of Lasswade, about six miles from Edinburgh. It stands on the south bank of the North Esk, amidst very picturesque and romantic scenery. The left side of the house consists of a heavy mass of ivy clad masonry, while the rest is comparatively modern, with gables and a turret in the style of the early part of the seventeenth century. On one side its walls are close to the edge of a cliff which rises up perpendicularly from the river.'
