The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Lieut. Colnel Robert Archibald Trotter, is situated in the parish of Glencorse, about seven miles from Edinburgh. It stands in a well timbered park of 120 acres, in which are some old Scotch firs of large size.
The house originally was built by Robert Trotter about the end of the last century. It was however much enlarged and improved by John Trotter in 1843. It is in the Italian villa style of architecture, and in the interior are some elegant apartments. It contains among other paintings some excellent family portraits by Raeburn.'
