The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of William Stuart Walker, Esq., C.B., is situated in the parish of Stow, Midlothian. The older part of the house is of considerable age, but it was about the year 1811 much enlarged, while a portion of it was retained in the present castellated structure, which was built by Brigadier-General Alexander Walker, who purchased the estate about the year 1810. The estate was formerly possessed by a family named Rutherford, and prior to that, the house was occupied by the Archbishops of St Andrews as a hunting lodge, the land being situated in Ettrick Forest. A stone cross still surmounts the west gable of the house.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library
