Description

A view down Glenelg with the ruins of a tower in the foreground and a settlement of thatched cottages nearby. In the distance is a small settlement of houses and the ruins of a large building. Three men are dipicted climbing up the hill to the ruins of the tower in the foreground, where another three men are watching smoke billow out of the centre of the building. Two men appear at the very top of the remains. A waterfall is apparent to the far right of the image.

The small village of Glenelg, with its thatched cottages, lies at the head of Sleat Sound. The Government considered the position of Glenelg to be of strategic importance. To the north of the village we see the barracks of Bernera built in 1722. These were never fully manned even in the Jacobite uprising. They were eventually used as housing, and have since fallen into ruin. To the east we see Dun Telve, a very well preserved mainland broch even today.
