Inverness is situated at the mouth of the River Ness in the north-east of Scotland. It developed as a Pictish settlement in the 5th century. It gained its city status at the beginning of this millennium, reflecting its status as the 'Capital of the Highlands'. Inverness is a dynamic, rapidly expanding city with a population well in excess of 50,000. It is the administrative centre for the Highland Council and a focal point for road, rail and air communications in the region. Buildings of note include the 19th century Inverness Castle, Inverness Cathedral, and the Old High Church with its medieval tower. Ness Islands offer a location for pleasant walks in the city.
