Description

In the centre of the picture there is an ornate church with large tracery windows and ornamental pinnacles. The Chapel is partially obscured by the large leafy tree within its grounds. The garden is enclosed by a low wall and decorative railings. The Chapel is surrounded by tall tenement buildings and in front there is a busy street scene showing pedestrians, a man moving barrels, and a horse and wagon.

St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Edinburgh, is situated between the north end of Leith Street and the south end of Broughton Street. The original building was designed by James Gillespie Graham and built in 1814. The building underwent significant changes and enlargements in the following decades. The most significant improvements were undertaken towards the end of the 19th century, in part necessitated by damage caused by the fire at the adjacent Theatre Royal in 1892. Originally the Chapel of St Mary's it acquired Cathedral status in 1878. Picardy Place in Edinburgh runs between the south ends of Leith Walk and Broughton Street.
