This rural coastal landscape shows the bay around Largs with hills in the background. The sky is overcast with thick grey clouds. A row of houses are behind a field that is fenced off with a large gate. A small building is positioned directly on the shoreline. Some farm animals, possibly sheep, are walking along the path.

Largs is a small coastal town situated on the Firth of Clyde in North Ayrshire. This painting dates from 1818 at which point Largs was still a small village. During the nineteenth century Largs was to grow in size with the building of a pier in 1834 and the opening of a rail connection in 1885.
