This photograph shows railway tracks and rolling stock passing under Waverley Bridge, the buildings in the background are of Edinburgh's Old Town, to the left of Cockburn Street, a sign reading "Cockburn Hotel, Philips, Family & Commercial" indicates Cockburn's Hotel and to the right, the sign which reads "Cumming & Son's bazaar, Portmanteaus, Bags, Brushes" indicates a store.

The original Waverley Bridge, a stone arch structure, was replaced during the extensive remodelling of the station in the late 1860s and early 1870s. This second bridge was in turn replaced by the current bridge which was completed in 1896.
The photograph is dated c1873 because it shows the newly rebuilt Waverley Bridge shortly after its re-opening in February 1873 and there is still evidence of the remains of the old bridge abutments in the view, awaiting removal.
The vegetable market displaced by the construction of this second bridge was replaced by an indoor site designed by Robert Morham. This was demolished in 1974 and replaced by Waverley shopping centre, later called Princes Mall.
