Francis Rawdon-Hastings, born on 9 December 1754, later became second Earl of Moira and subsequently Marquess of Hastings. Educated at Oxford, he pursued a distinguished military career, serving prominently in the American War of Independence, where he fought at Bunker Hill and commanded with notable success, including a celebrated victory at Hobkirk’s Hill. Rapidly promoted, he rose to senior rank and later held important commands in Europe, including service in Holland and as Commander-in-Chief in Scotland. Alongside his military achievements, he was active in politics, influential in the House of Lords, and closely connected to the royal family. He married Flora Muir Campbell, Countess of Loudoun, in 1804, further cementing his prominent social and political standing.
