Louis Blériot became famous for being the first to fly an aircraft across the English Channel. On 25 July 1909 in his Model XI 25 horsepower monoplane he flew from Les Barraques, France to Dover, England.
This feat won him a prize of £1,000 offered by the London Daily Mail and resulted in his emergence as one of the leading aircraft pilots and manufacturers of the era.
