Description
A man walks beside his son who is riding on a donkey into the picture, over cobbles and beside townswomen and columns. The figures are repeated as the picture recedes: on the left the man rides the donkey; they turn to the right and both the man and the son ride the donkey; then, as they cross the bridge, neither ride the donkey and they carry it. The townspeople look on. Beneath the bridge in the background the donkey struggles on its back in the water. The dress of the scene is classical and the rhyme in the lower right reads,
"The Man that Pleased None

Through the town this good man and his son
Strove to ride as to please everyone:
Self, son, or both tried,
Then the ass had a ride;
While the world, at their efforts, poked fun.

You cannot hope to please all. Don't try."
