Netherbow Port from the East, 1764
Description
A busy street scene filled with men, women and children. An archway with a portcullis gate leads through the Netherbow Port. The structure has two towers with spires and a large central clock tower with a weathervane. In front of the gate there are horse-drawn carriages with passengers. One of the carriage drivers is carrying a whip. A flag with a horse motif hangs outside one of the buildings.

Not painted from life, copied from an earlier work.
The Netherbow Port was the main gateway into the burgh of Edinburgh. It stood between the Canongate and the High Street. People entering the bugh had to pay a fee at the gate. It was demolished in 1764. Brass cobbles in the street now mark where it stood.
