Robert Adam was fascinated with the art of drawing and the architecture of the classical world, and travelled through France and Italy on his Grand Tour 1755 to 1757.

Adam visited Spalatro (Split) in 1757, accompanied by the French architect Clérisseau and two draughtsmen. They spent five weeks examining and recording the ruins of the palace of the Emperor Diocletian, built on the shores of the Adriatic. In this engraving architectural detail is mixed with romanticised picturesque images of tourists, possibly Adam and friends.

Published in 1764, Adam’s `Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia’ contains 61 plates of engravings, showing the palace in ruins.
