The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'The mansion house of Spott, the residence of Miss Watt, is situated in the parish of Spott . The original house was very ancient, but was, about fifty years ago, modernized and much improved.
It stands in a beautiful situation at the foot of the Doon Hill, and is built on a rock at the side of a ravine or glen about a mile long, through which the Brock or Spott Water flows. It commands extensive views of the flat country about Dunbar, the Bass Rock, the Isle of May and the South-east coast of Fife.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Spott House has now been split up to individual residential premises.
