While the women are portrayed in all black and relatively the same posture the horses vary in shade and galloping position. Women in the Victorian era rode side-saddle as it was seen to preserve the ladies' modesty. This practise was also partly due to their long, heavy skirts; it was impractical for women to ride astride.
