This photograph is from a volume entitled 'Photographs of houses in the vicinity of Lauriston Castle' which was compiled in 1909. The book has the armorial bookplate of Macknight Crawfurd of Cartsburn, Lauriston Castle, on the inside cover.
Barnton House was a large mansion house, built in a castellated style. It had two towers, one on the south, and the other on the east side. It first became the seat of Lord Balmerino in 1623.
It was demolished round about the 1920s.
The site now occupied by the garden of a modern house; no remains are visible.
