The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This large mansion, the residence of Robert Andrew Macfie, Esq., is situated in the Parish of Colinton, about three quarters of a mile from the village of that name, and two or three miles from the Merchiston district of Edinburgh. It stands not far from the foot of the Pentlands, on a richly wooded and well watered rising ground, between the Bonaly or Redford and Howden burns, at the mouth of Howden Glen. The house was probably built by Sir William Murray, Master of Works to King Charles II., and brother of Sir Robert Murray, founder of the Royal Society of London, who married a daughter of Sir James Foulis of Colinton, to whose family all or most of the land which now forms the estate of Dreghorn, as well as a great extent of land in the immediate neighbourhood, anciently belonged.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection, Central Library, Edinburgh.
Dreghorn Castle was demolished after falling into disrepair in the 1950s.
