The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of James Charles Hope Vere, Esq., is beautifully situated in the south-eastern extremity of the parish of Dalmeny. It stands in the vale of the Almond, amidst rising grounds richly wooded on the south and north. The house is a plain square building, in the classical style of architecture, having two wings, with a total frontage of 221 feet. It was erected from designs by William Adam, architect, about the end of the last century.'
The original name of the place was Creagach, a Celtic word signifying a craggy ridge, afterwards softened into Craigie'.
