The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of the Right Hon. James Walter Sandilands, Lord Torphichen, is situated to the west of the village of Midcalder, about twelve miles from Edinburgh. It stands on an elevated lawn on the banks of the Almond, and is surrounded by ornamental walks, and is well sheltered by lofty trees and numerous plantations. The building originally consisted of a tower, to which comparatively modern additions have been added. This tower is of great antiquity, and is traditionally thought to have been built by the Earls of Fife.'
