Title
The Advance on the Somme
Description
"What a force of emotion M. Raemaekers has infused in this little scene, simple, direct, truly imaginative. How admirably shown is the old Frenchman's loss of touch with his surroundings. So intent is he on catching the dull reverberations from the avenging cannon on the Somme battlefield that his words, 'Our guns come nearer,' have escaped from his lips unbeknown to him. Equally masterly is the German soldier's arrested gesture as he pauses, about to drink, and gazes, frowning."
