Excerpt from page - " Portobello Baths 1806 - The Committee of subscribers have the satisfaction of announcing that the four hot sea water baths, one of the cold sea baths (comprehending the first part of the plan) are now completely furnished and ready for the use of the public........a sedan chair is provided to carry any lady or gentleman who chuse [sic] it to and from the baths and there is an additional room communicating with bath No 3 to which a bed is fitted up for such of the bathers as are ordered by their Physicians to take the Bath at a high degree of temperature and to repose in bed for sometime after bathing.......Edinburgh Evening Courant April 1806.
