Edward Octavius Douglas was the son of Henry Alexander Douglas and his wife, Elizabeth Dalzell. Henry was a descendant of William Douglas, 1st earl of Queensberry and Elizabeth is a granddaughter of Alexander Dalzell, Earl of Carnwath.
