Annotation in top left hand corner of the painting reads 'Anglo-Saxon runic stone. Dr Duncan gathered up the fragments of this ancient monument and erected them in his manse' garden.
Many contradictory opinions have been broached, whether it was of Celtic or [word illegible] in origin; as a Latin inscription is on the back and front of cross, while, runic characters are on its side.
Daniel Wilson, (author of "Pre Historic Times") thinks "it is unquestionably the most important Runic monument in Britain and has carried an attention fully equal to the great interest justly pertaining to it".'
Annotation below title reads 'Supposed to have been originally a Druidical Monument from the Runic pattern on the sides - as represented by the pieces of sculpture.'
