12.30 & we "nine" were all invited. The other invited guests were, the General & officers of the Division, Staniovitch & his medical staff & several stray "brass-hats" at present in Ismail. Of course a great deal of bowing & scraping went on to begin with & we had to do the polite & make nice speeches to the various big-wigs. (or rather they did so - the foreign officers are adapts at that game!) At one end of the "mess room" there was an altar, on which was The Holy Book, Cross, Ikon, a cake & wine, & before the altar the priest. After we had all been blessed & the place saturated with incense, Staniovitch was brought forth & the old priest mumbled a lot of "words of wisdom" to him. The cake was then blessed, cut in to 3 portions - "Father, Son & Holy Ghost" - & each bit sprinkled with wine, then Staniovitch & 3 brother officers seized the plate containing the cake & balanced it on their open palms & round & round they twirled it - reminded one of "table-turning"! - Staniovitch's thoughts meanwhile, dwelling on his absent family & home. When he had finished meditating, the plate ceased
