Nov:22nd 1916 Ismail. Bessarabia.

Here we are still at Ismail, well & happy & very busy with our little Hospital. At present we have not many interesting cases & nothing bad. Our patients are chiefly Serbian; nice things, I do like them. The weather has been very damp & cold & disagreeable. The mud is beyond description, thick, slimy stuff, some of the roads are quite impassable & walking is a work of art - & a most precarious art too! Going back & forwards is no "fun" - especially in the dark. Our stable-yard is now too terrible for words, we just wade in filth & go sliddering & skiddering about & the smells - ! enough said!
We were at a most interesting ceremony the other day. The S.M.O. - Dr Staniovitch - celebrated his family "Saint Day" - a most important day event in the life of any Serb - they celebrate their "Saint's Day" instead of a birthday. Only their "Saint Day" is very much more important than our birthdays! Well - to continue - this "celebration" took place at
