Description
The soldiers salute their priests as they do their officers & the priest returns the salute by douching his cross. The priests go to war with the soldiers, dressed in their long black or brown flowing robes & with their long hair streaming over their shoulders. They march steadily along with the troops or sit in the railway carriages amidst them & always with his cross. The sign of the Cross is always made very slowly & solemnly, quite differently from other churches, & from right to left upon the breast & it is always accompanied by a slow & reverent bowing of the head & is repeated usually 3 times. Well - enough of the Russian religion for the present! But the Church in Russia seems to eliminate everything else & one cannot help feeling its power.
14th Dr. Inglis arrived unexpectedly yesterday from Braila to see us all. She hopes we may all join up again for a month or two, it would be topping if we could, but it all depends on what orders come from Headquarters.
We are attached to the army now, so must go where they go. Dr. Inglis is taking the mail-bag - so this letter stands a good chance of getting through. Must away back to work./
