Description
Ikons & church banners & candles & thus the singing congregation walks out to the churchyard & processes round the church. Before they re-enter the priest cries "Christ is risen!", the people answer "He is risen indeed!" The choir bursts into song & the joyful mass of Easter morning begins. After the service, the priest must bless the "kuliche" & "paskha" - cakes & sweetmeats made of milk, eggs & sugar, which the peasant women have brought to church with them. The Russian clergy form a caste apart, priests & deacons must marry & they marry the daughters of priests & deacons. Religion stands for everything in Russia. "Holy Russia" the Empire is called & the soldiers of the Tsar are his "Christ-loving army". The Russian people certainly seem deeply religious. In every cathedral in Petrograd & Moscow at all hours of the day, women are kneeling before sacred pictures bowing to the ground & whispering endless prayers. A Russian peasant crosses himself before & after eating, crosses himself before he sets out on a railway journey or before he goes in to battle & before he retires to rest.
