Description
We've had a very busy day, the Hospital is full. There is no word of us moving elsewhere at present. When "off duty" after tea I went to the biggest of the churches here & stayed for part of the service. It was most interesting. The churches inside are all most gorgeous & gaudy. There are no seats in a Russian church & no organ. What strikes one on entering is the beautiful screen which separates the sacrarium from the body of the church. It is a carved partition painted & gilded, & in the cathedrals & great churches, is covered with
silver & gold Ikons, often very richly jewelled & with numerous lamps & tapers burning before them. At each side of the screen is a narrow door through which people seem to pass at will, to & fro, for there is a great feeling of freedom in a Russian church, & everyone does just what he feels inclined to do. No women, however, may ever pass behind in to "the holy of holies".
In the centre of the screen are folding doors which are only used for ceremonial purposes & are called "The Royal Gates". In the Liturgy, for instance, they are opened wide, & the priest passes through conveying the bread & wine for consecration. Immediately within stands the altar, a perfectly plain, square structure with nothing at all upon it but a large copy
