Description
great man" in his den & chartering a boat for themselves!"Side-lights" of the S.W. on this adventure to Russia & Rumania would fill a volume easily! I suppose everyone just thinks us slightly mad - "English" - & so think it better to humour us!
12th We arrived "home" late last night. We had such a "job" with the stores. It was pitch dark & freezingly cold & as the wharf is some 2 miles from our billets, it was a considerable time before one of us got up to tell them we had arrived & to send down carts for the stuff. I remained with the stores & had to wait 2 mortal hours, a frozen, mass, warding off the innumerable stragglers who haunt the wharf & who I expected every minute to make off with some of my precious stores.
Finally 2 of our old friends - the Serbian carts - arrived & we got the stores all loaded, then I perched myself up "aloft" as in days of old & we jolted homewards. The horses succeeded in bolting & dashing into a sort of pond place, smashing their rope traces & leaving some of the stuff reposing by the roadside, By a fluke, I managed to hang on & so escaped a decidedly muddy ducking! It was nearly mid-night when we finally arrived at our destination. This is a land of adventures & no mistake!
