Description
of the river. Tultcha itself is built on a plateau & is, next to Constanza, the chief town in the Dobrudja & the seat of the Prefect. Above the plateau, on a spur of which the town lies, there has been erected a monument commemorating the redemption of the Dobrudja in 1878. Like Galatz & Braila, Tultcha was the scene of half a dozen battles during the 17th & 18th & 19th centuries & is historic fighting
ground. It was a day of brilliant sunshine, with just a tinge of frost in the air. We were "treated" to a very wild, tempestuous sunset, gorgeous purple & crimson hues, which showed up the rugged peaks so magnifcantly [magnificently]. Later a big, silvery moon rose
& the reflections on the water were most lovely.
We got to Reni at 7.30, but found we could get no boat on to Galatz that night, so as Reni is merely a small frontier town & boasts of no hotel, inn or anything in that line, we were stranded! But not for long, it suddenly dawned upon us, that the Russian flag ship might still be there, (we lunched on board her on our way up to the front.) so nothing for it but to go aboard her & make love to the Admiral. We made inquiries & found she was there alright,
