Still, not only is there humour in Russian airs, but there is also a fine sense of space & freedom. All this is in the Russian melodies & a world of emotion as well. Some are quaint & stirring, some are simply dull & colourless & others are depressing - but all are sad.
Well - to change the subject we've nearly all been "down" with dysentry [dysentery] - due to heat, flies & water - & very sorry indeed have we been for ourselves. What's even "beastlier" - those aeroplanes never leave us alone & the guns are now so close that the air
seems to shake with them. Every morning those abominable Bulgar (or more probably "Boche") areoplanes [aeroplanes] pay us a visit, we appear to be their target & they "drop 'em pretty thick". This morning they made themselves extra unpleasant, we're evidently "bomb-proof", some wonderful escapes we've had too. Luck seems with us, for they drop all round us, have made no end of damage in the village & the casualities among both soldiers & civilians are very heavy but the "S.W." are safe. By the fence, just a few yards beyond the camp, the last bomb landed. Beside the fence was a huge haystack,
