Description
ence of the Tsar. A huge, imposing "red" pile. It contains the Throne room of Peter The Great, The court Ball Hall, etc: etc: - Midway between the vast bulk of the Imperial residence & the lofty triumphal archway - way that opens through into The Nevsky, there stands the towering Alexander Column. The pedestal is 28 ft high, upon this stands the imposing column, which is the greatest monolith of modern times, it is of polished Finnish granite. At the summit, standing on a ball is a high, bronze angel. The Monument of Peter The Great is very imposing. The Emperor is seated on horseback, represented as mountaing a rock, his face to The Neva with his hand raised & pointing to all his works.
An interesting place is The Imperial Carriage Museum, it contains the royal carriages, the coronation coach, the sledge made by Peter the great & the shattered coach in which Alex II rode on March 1881. There are crowds of "places of interest" here & we're trying to see them all. The shops are most attractive, especially the peasant ones, they are fascinating. We find we can "shop" all right now in the native tongue, it's wonderful with how little of the language one can get along. The people in the shops & also the "izv?shtschiks" "[ishvoshtniks]" (cabmen), are through long practise, particularly smart at interpreting dumb-show! German
