Description
their robes of blue to an enormous extent, so that they seem to bulge out over their seat. However long you keep your coachman, even in the depth of winter, he does not mind for he seems to have an absolutely unlimited capacity for gentle & peaceful slumber!
Petrograd is a city of beautiful churches, among the finest being the St. Isaac's. It is certainly the largest & most magnificant [magnificent], - 12,000 worshippers can attend a service there in comfort. It is built in extravagant magnificence of granite & marble, the great central dome is of gilded bronze. Inside the Cathedral is disappointingly dark, so much so that much of the wonderful richness of the internal decorations is lost upon one - the polished walls with their array of immense mosaic pictures, the great pillars
of malachite & lapis lazuli, the jewelled ikons & the splendid sanctuary screen of gilt, marble & bronze.
Another fine church is the Church of The Resurrection, which was erected on the spot where Alex II was mortally wounded.
It is of granite, marble & coloured tiles. The spot where the bomb was thrown is kept as it then was & is covered over by a canopy
on jasper pillars. The external appearance of the church is somewhat flamboyant in style & aggressively extravagant in colouring. Inside it is really beautiful, especially the beautiful mosaics.
