Description
"The Social-Democrat, Bernstein, speaking in the Reichstag, October 1916, said: 'The number of the killed is already estimated at 4,500,000, that of permanently crippled at 3,300,000, and that of wounded at 11,000,000. How long yet is this massacre going to last?' ... At the end of October 1916, a date which synchronizes with the defeat of half of the entire German army at the Battle of the Somme, the Kaiser is officially stated by the Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (15 January 1917) to have sent the following letter to the German Chancellor in 'his honest desire to conclude peace.' French critics were, however, sceptical as to the date of the composition ...."
