Two closes formed the pair of Playhouse Closes in the Canongate area of Edinburgh. They gave access to the town's first public theatre, or Playhouse, which opened in 1747. This is the "Old" or "Under" Playhouse Close which had at one time also been called Inglis Close after a family who owned part of it.
The 'closes' of Edinburgh's Old Town are narrow passages branching off at right angles from the main streets. They provide access to the tenement buildings, and often to small shared courtyards. Many closes also act as shortcuts between Old Town's main streets.
Freddy Theys is a Belgian engraver of town scenes, botanics and portraits. He visits Scotland annually.
